Let us start with our first new story on Vikram and Betal!
King Vikramaditya (or Vikram) wanted to bring happiness to his kingdom. He was told by a Sage (who practice religion) to capture Betal (Vetal or Vetala) and bring it to him for getting precious treasure. Betal was a celestial spirit who used to animate dead bodies. Betal used to hang inverted on a tree in a dangerous jungle full of spirits.
But Vikram was brave. He kept on going inside the jungle. It was getting dark but Vikram moved on. Vikram spotted Betal hanging upside down on a tree. King immediately told him “Hey Betal, I have come to capture you.” Betal started laughing and told King Vikram to go back. But King was determined. He pounced at Betal and got hold of him. He had put Betal on his shoulder and started taking him back to the sage. Betal tried to get free but all in vain.
As they were moving in the dark jungle, Betal told King “Hey Vikram I have heard you are known for your wisdom, justice and take best decisions in life. The journey will be long. Let us avoid monotony of travel and I will tell you a story. The condition is that if you speak then I will fly back to my tree in the Jungle. But if you know the answer of my story but stay silent then your head will be smashed into 1000 pieces. It is a good story and let me see how much wisdom you have”
Betal started narrating a story.
Long ago there were two teams in a game known as Cricketaya. In this game, there use to be 2 teams of 11 people each. These teams had to play better against the other team to win the game. There were two best teams which used to fight for the number one position.
First team was of King Chena and the second team was of King Rajastha. These teams were owned by their respective Kings. Kings use to appoint leaders of the team. These leaders use to be heads of team and use to give orders to play well to remaining 10 players besides playing themselves.
The leader of team of King Chena was Shurvir Dhonya and the leader of team of King Rajastha was Dhairya Dravida. These two leaders were the best known people in the game of Cricketaya and use to exhibit lot of passion for their team. The Goddess of Wisdom and Wealth had given a boon to both of them. As per the boon, if they give heart and soul for the winning of the team they commanded, money and wisdom will shower upon them. But if they do anything to let their own team lose, curse will fall on them. Money and fame will go away from them.
These two leaders never disappointed Goddess of wisdom and wealth to carry on their duties. They always gave their best to win their game.
Once there was an important match between the two teams. The God of Death came to the dreams of both the Kings and told them if they try to win their upcoming match to be held, their son’s will die. The God of death also disclosed them that the other king will also meet the same fate if he tries to win his match and have been informed about it. Both the Kings called their team leaders and told them of the Dream. They told them, we would not want you to win the game. After both of them went back, Goddess of wisdom and wealth appeared and told them that tomorrow match is an important match and she would be sitting in the ground throughout the entire match to see their Cricketaya passion.
Betal stopped after this story and told Vikram, “Hey Vikram, you are a man of wisdom. These two people had their duty to win the match of the their team . On the other hand, if they try to win for their team, the son of their team owner will be dead. There is no good deed than obeying your master. But you have a duty to play properly to give justice to your purpose of existence. Besides, the curse will fall on them if they try to lose. The honor and money will go. On one side, there is disobedience and loss of son of your King, on the other side there is injustice to your duties and a curse which will make them poor. Which one they should choose?
Hey Vikram, if you know the answer but do not answer then your head will be smashed into 1000 pieces.
Vikram wisdom was being tested. He was a king who always came up with right solution. But this situation was not an easy one. He had to say something which was logical and agreeable. He thought for a while and answered.

Vikram answered
“Hey Betal, There is a purpose of life. The purpose of life of these two leaders was to win matches for the team they commanded. They also own a duty to spectators who come to see the match. It is a very big duty. It cannot be neglected. But obeying the master is of no less importance. Had the master told them to lose a match for some ulterior motive it would have been easier to make a decision to disobey the master. But in this case, the purpose of master was not a small one. It was to save the life of their son. Losing a son is not an easy thing for a father. It is a duty of a father to protect the life of his children. Both of the kings are not wrong since they are doing their duties as their father.
So my decision would be in below steps
- Get a meeting of both players and Kings together since each of the king know that the other king is also going through same problem.
- Shurvir Dhonya will be appointed caption of team of King Rajastha and Dhairya Dravida will be appointed captain of King Chena. This way their team will be swapped.
- Both of the Kings will give blessing for winning to the leader of other team. I.e. King Chena will give blessing for winning to Shurvir Dhonya who now is in charge of team of King of Rajastha. King Rajastha will give blessings of winning to Dhairya Dravida who is now in charge of team of King of Chena. This way they would be giving blessing to leader of other team.
- Both leaders will try to win passionately for the new team they now commanded.
Hence, both the leaders will not be cursed by boon of Goddess of wisdom. Both the kings have also supported captain of other team hence they are trying to lose their match. Even if their teams win the match they cannot be held accountable for the winning of their team since they have blessed the other team’s captain. This way they keep the possibility of winning of their team without the fear of losing their son.
Betal heard and said,
“Hey Vikram, it is no wonder that people call you king of wisdom. It is the most appropriate answer under the circumstances. But you forgot one thing, you spoke hence I am going back to my tree”.
Betal started flying and went back to his tree. Vikram got furious and started following him back to get hold of him. Vikram was adamant that he will get hold of Betal to fullfil his promise to Sage.
